Food For Thought

We all get sick, we all have some health issues (none of us are perfect hate to break it to ya! ) I mean let’s be real I refer to myself as the unhealthiest healthy person there is! (RA, new digestive issues, Hypothyroidism to name a few) WIth that said, do you pay attention to what you eat and how it correlates to how you feel? No I am not talking about counting calories and macros so to speak but more so the actual FOOD.

 

Let’s backtrack a little bit, our ancestors how did they eat? They ate stuff that came from the ground, stuff that their bodies were MEANT to eat. Meaning their bodies used the food as fuel. It did not store excess “fake” food it could not use or get confused and cause inflammation and other troubles when processed stuff and additives were ingested.

 

Think on it —– Our bodies are machines —- nutrition is a MAJOR KEY to fitness, weight loss and HEALTH overall. They use certain foods as fuel, certain things defend infection and actually help prevent inflammation. Processed foods CAN CAUSE infection, inflammation, head aches, digestive issues (inflammation) etc. Granted our bodies HAVE evolved since our ancestors but not so much to make them function properly with fake stuff. I mean were not “fake” right?

 

Maybe you agree and you are one of those who have changed their diets, their lifestyles yet still have health problems, immune system issues, maybe something as severe as cancer…. There may not be a direct answer as to why, but many studies do lead to our early years, possibly even when we were in the womb. I for one definitely did not grow up eating grilled chicken and veggies and fish and asparagus every night. My childhood makes me honestly think of one thing—– Dairy Queen Blizzards…. They were my absolute favorite thing, and loaded with probably 96% unhealthy stuff! Now I am not saying that Blizzards caused my health issues today or that no one should ever have one. But a more than once a week thing (true story) definitely didn’t help! And that is just a glimpse to my growing up nutrition habits. Back to the point though —–

 

Sugar and Fatty foods signal our opioid response which stimulates the release of the feel good hormone dopamine. These foods make us feel good (before you crash from the sugar high) just like actual opioid drugs do. That is why you may hear people saying sugar can be and is just as addictive as cocaine. The more you eat of these things, the more your body will naturally crave them which leads to overeating and in turn weight gain. So many of our foods today are loaded with things that will trigger this response, and sadly most food manufacturing companies are well aware and sometimes are behind paying for research that will favor their products to downplay the real problems to consumers. Again these foods (being processed with additives) trigger the wrong things in our bodies leading to inflammation, possible illness, etc!

 

Pregnancy and Food — Another potential big influencer —- When a pregnant mother eats, the fetus is getting the nutrients from that food to help grow, if they’re eating large amounts of processed foods with additives, possibly taking medications or other human derived substances…. Would it be so out of reach to say that something could not stem from that? Tests have been done to show how not everything is left in the womb, some things are indeed embedded in the fetus for their lifetime. “Mothers who eat a lot of junk food while pregnant in a way set up their child to be possibly addicted to high fat, high sugar diets when they are weaned” University of Adelaide .

 

Now NO I am not saying go blame your mom, just a few years ago we had NO idea what we do now as far as food and processed food go, the after effects and long term effects certain additives can have. I am writing this to get you aware, if you have a child, if you want to one day, you can do what is best for not only your health but your child’s as well. Now eating a bad meal here and there is not going to necessarily hurt your immune system but start now and try to practice balance. READ NUTRITION LABELS. There are plenty of healthy options now that don’t taste like cardboard. You can get creative with spices, you can order healthier options when out to eat most of the time.

 

Its your life, your priorities just remember to choose wisely.

Matthew 7:7

So if you know me, you know my faith is a HUGE part of my life. The past few years have had their ups and downs but I FINALLY fell like I know I am on track with where HE wants me to be.

Another thing you know if you follow me is I have recently started working with a company ID Life. Now I have always been one to think network marketing people were annoying (sorry but its true) so I never envisioned myself here. I had been praying for God to show me a new “opportunity” so to speak within Fitness to help get my crazy schedule more in line, and allow me to take care of myself and in turn my clients. Then I was presented with this… I was hesitant but after researching it, trying product, looking into the products, Logan Stout the CEO and what the company was all about I was stupid not to get involved. And it has already paid off, financially and mentally, physically AND spiritually.

Case in point: Everyday I ask God to show me what he wants me to do with that day, what opportunities to take, what directions to go, etc. Today as I am hurt once again, he put on me to open up Logan Stouts book I received upon joining…. and in the first chapter I see this, him quoting Matthew 7:7. One thing that has always scared me is being bold, asking for things so to speak. I know this comes from my mother and she will kill me for writing this but its the truth. She has always been one to never ask from anyone. This has led to sales being a scary concept for me, but since taking this position it is something I have been praying about. A client of mine gave me the bracelet with that same scripture on it and I wear it pretty much everyday. Think what you want but seeing that scripture in that book, by ID’s CEO just confirms to myself I am on the right path. He also speaks so highly on Vision and Belief in something in order to be successful. Well not only do I truly believe in our products and what they can do for my clients, family and friends but I believe God has placed me with this company within its early stages for a reason. I know I am all about getting uncomfortable when it comes to fitness, so its time to apply that same mindset to sales too.

Why am I sharing all of this? Because I want you to believe in you too. Look for Gods little hidden reminders all around you of what you are capable of. I am normally not this open about this kind of stuff, but why not be? If it motivates even one person to take a chance for what God has granted them the ability to do, they just needed to get that belief in themselves then I succeeded with this post.

God gives us all unique strengths and weaknesses, use and embrace all of them. Be you.

You are NEVER too old

“I am too old to do that.”

This statement is one of the absolute biggest load of crap that I hear far too often. To be completely honest is makes me furious when I hear it.

Yes as you age your body will change, but those changes do not mean you just have to get “old” ! It is all up to you how these “changes” affect you. You can settle and accept as you are, or you can strive to make the rest of your life the best of your life. It does not matter WHAT age you are, or what obstacles you have. If there is a will there is a way! We all have things thrown our way that are unfavorable, but its how we handle them that makes the difference.

The photo above is of one my very good friends. She is older than me, not saying by how much but I will say most women her age would tell you their bodies could NEVER look like that. But you know what she has that they don’t? Determination, and she believes in herself. She pushes herself, she has bad days, days she doesn’t want to work out, days she may eat something bad, but she doesn’t beat herself up for it. She has something she wants and she is working for it! Now I am not saying everyone should strive to look to look like for her when they hit 40 or above (and no I am not saying that is old AT ALL), but she is just a prime example of if there is a will there is a way!

First things first:

Do you ever look in the mirror or get in the dressing room and get mad at what you see or what doesn’t fit? Do you have high cholesterol or borderline diabetic?

If you said yes to any of those things OR if you have something similar to them that you’d like to change, guess what? You can! There is NO reason you can’t try to become healthier or more fit at any age.

Step 1-

Overcome your dumb excuses, they get you no where.

“I can’t run like I used to” – then start jogging, or even walking.

“I can’t afford healthy food.”  – pretty sure I have seen chicken at Kroger from time to time for $1.99/lb. Buy a lot of chicken to make different meals with, guaranteed it’ll go a lot farther than those boxed dinners. Lettuce is cheap, so are most fruits. Won’t Walmart beat any competitor? Then do some research, your health is worth it. I spend about $75-$100 a week on food for a week, breaking that down its $10/day. If you eat out every meal I promise you you’re spending more than that! (And I eat 5-6x a day).

“But I have arthritis, or any other medical issue” –  Hell, I was diagnosed with RA in 2008 and thought my life was dunzo. I was planning on riding around in a rascal scooter (yes I researched these back then) for the rest of my life at first…. then after having some much needed therapy and wake up discussions with my Dr. and loved ones I realized this was not the case. I did not want to end up like that I was young, hadn’t even graduated college yet! So I committed myself to changing. Was it easy? Heck no not at first, I had to push myself. Then after being consistent, slowly but surely things started improving. I was not in as much pain, my outlook on life got better, I was happier, then one thing led to another and remission came.

Step 2:

Decide you WANT this for YOU and those you love. Your health not only affects you but the ones around you too.

Step 3: 

Make a plan. Figure out a way to get to where you want to be. Start small progressing through small things first. Small changes can lead to BIG results over time.

Step 4:

GO AFTER IT! Get started. Let those closest to you know what you are doing so they can hold you accountable. If you fall off track know it is ok and most of all understand that any effort is better than nothing!

My Point?

If there is something you want in life, whether it be with work, relationships, health, fitness , whatever it is YOU CAN work towards it with hopes of seeing it being achieved. I know nothing is guaranteed in life, BUT it is better to try than to do nothing at all right?  You are never too old. All you have to have is a will to want something and be willing to work for it. It may be harder and take longer than you would like, but I assure God would not have given you the desire for something if He did not intend to see it come to pass. He also I promise does NOT want you to live a life of just getting by….. just paying the bills…. being healthy enough… no he gave you your body for a reason, he wants you to use it to honor him and the abilities he gave you! Now do NOT take this out of context, if you can’t swim but wish you were an olympic swimmer you may need to rethink that one. BUT if there is something that has been on your heart for a long time, go after it, don’t give up hope on it just because you should have done it years ago. If you woke up this morning you still have the ability.

So what are your excuses again?! Go after what you want! Life on earth is short, don’t waste it!!

With warm weather upon us, traveling is on everyones mind. Don’t ruin your hard work to get swimsuit ready with these tips for you, your friends and your family!

Warm weather is upon us (soon we promise), whether you are single traveling with friends or taking a family vacation; we are giving you two perspectives to see how you can stay on your A game and not ruin all your handwork while you are on the road! You can take a little from both regardless of where you are in life 🙂

Singles Healthy Travel Guide
I do not know about you but everyone around me seems to be dreaming of beaches and bikini’s and traveling to places to relax and enjoy some much needed “off” time. It always seems to start the second the first hint of spring hits. Gyms get packed, those who had already given up on their New Years resolutions seem to be jumping back on it, everyone trying their hardest to get beach body ready as soon as possible! Getting ready for these anticipated trips is great, BUT what about once you go on them? What do you do to be sure you can have fun, enjoy your friends and family, but not throw all your hard work out the window?!

Plan ahead
When you are packing your clothes, toiletries, etc, pack some healthy snacks too! Some of the things I always take are protein powder, nuts (like almonds or cashews), trail mix, energy/protein bars, apples, bananas, and oranges. Yes you can buy some of these things on the road but pre packing them prevents you being tempted to grab cookies or something else when you stop.

Drink up!
(yes alcohol if you are of age is fine in moderation in my book) but I am talking about water! If you are traveling to hot or humid places this is especially important. Dehydration can cause you to feel hungry when you are actually only thirsty. If you have eaten recently, and all of sudden you feel hungry again, drink a glass of water. If you still feel hungry after that then eat a light snack. Another tip is to drink a full glass of water before big meals, this will help you eat less as well. Aim to drink at least 6 8oz glasses a day. Take some ID Life Hydrate with you too! Add some in your water for a quick and easy way to get all those electrolytes and other nutrients in that you lose when you sweat in the heat!

Choose the right stuff (MOST) of the time when eating out.
I am not about to tell you to not eat out while on a vacation, you earned this vacation so you should be able to enjoy meals out! It just depends on what you choose while you are out. Order salads with protein and dressing ON THE SIDE. Order grilled proteins with light, or no creamy sauces and stick to steamed veggies or a potato with salsa versus sour cream and butter. I would save a few meals to be splurges where you can eat whatever you want.

Alcohol.
When drinking, stick to lighter options like light beers, Michelob Ultra is one of the best in my opinion when it comes to beer. Wines (just not a whole bottle) are good, and for fruity drinks and cocktails if they have a light version order that, if not stick to just one and then switch to something like vodka soda. This will also help prevent horrific hangovers as sugar in these drinks can dehydrate you faster.

GET MOVING.
What better way to get some time with friends or even try something new? Go for a hike, or walk on the beach, go zip lining or ride bikes together around town, play volleyball, etc. Just get out there and have some fun! There are so many ways to be active, get creative! If you are at a location that has a gym, try to get in some YOU time and get in there a few times. Think of it as a benefit to YOU! You get one body and you have tried so hard to take care of it, taking some time out even on vacation to take care of it more is a GOOD thing!

RELAX!!

Sleep in, be lazy some of the time. Do not over plan every second of your trip so you are stressed out trying to get from one place to the next. Enjoy this time off. You earned it :).

Family Travel Tips!

There’s always some kind of temptation that completely ruins my healthy diet and makes it easy to over-indulge while taking a break from the real world. That’s why I have come up with a few tricks for myself to making my diet and exercise plan still work while I am away with my family. It also gives them a reason to stay fit as well.

Bring Water
There have been so many times on the road when my family has just stopped at a gas station and picked up all of the wrong kinds of drinks. Whether it’s energy drinks or soft drinks, they’re not good for your body and energy. I always pack water now so that I can keep my family hydrated and stay away from wasting time and money on stops for sugary drinks. It even helps my kids to feel better when we’re on longer road trips as soda can really make your stomach hurt.

Trick to Stop Eating at the Buffet
I never tell myself that I can’t have something when my family goes out to a gourmet restaurant or really rich buffet. However, there’s a difference between eating all you can and just eating what you want. I typically go up once and find some healthy items with a few things that I just have to try. I never get too many of the really rich foods, and I always look for healthy vegetable dishes the next day to balance out my bad eating the night before. It has really helped me to keep my calorie count down.

Find Active Things to Do
There’s always a game to play with kids at the pool or a park to explore when you’re on vacation. My favorite memories are taking my kids to parks while on vacation and looking for some new adventures. I always like to play some fun games or plan some kind of sports adventure. There are a lot of towns with city centers that have tennis courts or volleyball courts that make it a fun afternoon activity.

Go Swimming
The best activity you can do while on vacation is to swim. There are a lot of different activities like scuba diving or rowboats. There are also boogie boarding or even just swimming laps in the pool. Water polo is a great game to play with the kids at the hotel pool.

These are some tips and tricks that my family uses when on vacation and will be doing so on our upcoming trip to Orlando. With so many hotels in Orlando, finding the right hotel, with a quality gym can be at times, difficult. Sites like Gogobot make the process a little easier to find the perfect place for you and your family.
